Saturday Six XXVII

Saturday Six XXVII

In this week’s Saturday Six Vol. XXVII, we’re excited to bring you a victorious bakery, the joys of nightswimming at a motel, fibers of the folk, QUEEN on the screen, Led Zeppelin on paper, and a viciously implausible act of deception.

EAT: CAPITAL CITY BAKERY

Capital City Bakery is dedicated to providing a different approach to classic treats like cupcakes, brownies and special ocassion cakes. CCB started out as a home baking business in 2010, before growing into Austin’s very first all-vegan bakery food trailer. A few years later, this woman-owned, Texas-grown business opened their first storefront location on Cesar Chavez Street and continues to bake up sweet treats daily. Give their Instagram a look-see, and let those yummy treats take you there!

ADMIRE: FOLK FIBERS

Have you heard about this girl? Her name is Maura Grace Ambrose and she’s been making waves in the “makers” world for quite some time now, and her creations are downright beautiful. We’re personally partial to her quilts and pillows, but don’t let our bias lead you astray. She has done and does oh so much more, including workshops! Every Folk Fibers quilt is entirely hand quilted in Austin, Texas. Her passion for quilting is rooted in the love and beauty achieved from hand stitching. Maura organically grows, harvests, and forages for natural dyes such as Indigo, Cochineal, Walnut Hulls, and Onion Skins. You can read more details about her passions, process and patterns, as well as shop her amazing goods, on her website and also admire her work here on the FF instagram.

READ: BAD BLOOD: SECRETS AND LIES IN A SILICON VALLEY STARTUP

Fascinating, chilling, spell-binding, thrilling, and devastating are just a few of the words used in reviews of this best selling new release from award winning two-time Pulitzer Prize-winning investigative reporter at The Wall Street Journal, John Carreyrou. Elizabeth Holmes founded Theranos in 2014 and was the CEO considered to be the “next Steve Jobs.” She was a “brilliant” Stanford dropout whose startup promised to revolutionize the medical industry. How? A machine would make blood testing easier and faster. Invested in by huge names, Theranos sold shares in a fundraising round that valued the company at more than $9 billion, putting Holmes's worth at an estimated $4.7 billion. There was a problem though: The technology didn't even work. The largest fraud since Enron. How did this actually happen? Pick it up - it’s almost too crazy to believe and definitely worth the read.

LOOK: LED ZEPPELIN BY LED ZEPPELIN

Led Zeppelin by Led Zeppelin is the first and only official illustrated book ever to be produced in full collaboration with the members of the band. Woah! 400 pages spanning 50 years of the band, starting with a performance in a tiny club, to their performance at London's O2 Arena, when 20 million fans broke the world record for highest demand for tickets for a single concert. 300 photographs of the band from photographers around the world - many from the band members’ personal collections that have never been seen before. From the stages to the studios to the candid touring shots, there is also rare artwork and fascinating documents from the Atlantic Records vaults. This book is a must have for any true Led Zeppelin fan.

WATCH: THE FIRST PREVIEW FOR BOHEMIAN RHAPSODY

QUEEN. This preview. Woah. Fan of the band or not, getting a look into the real story behind lead man Freddie Mercury and Co. is gonna be brilliant. And the most astounding part (besides what looks like Rami Malek’s roll of a lifetime) is the fact that Queen band members Brian May and Roger Taylor served as producers on the film. Bohemian Rhapsody is based on a script by Academy Award nominee Anthony McCarten (The Theory of Everything). The film chronicles the period between the band’s formation in the 1970s and Mercury’s death in 1991. Get ready to rock, and maybe bring a tissue or two.
