Great all purpose boot

I have atypical feet. No arch to speak of, a bit wide, but low volume. My ankles sit low (due to flat feet), so often the shaft and vamp are loose. As I can use all the support I can get, this can be troublesome. I usually require an insert for the support and to lift my ankles up. On a brannock device, my left foot is just below a 10, right foot is just below a 9-1/2. In running sneakers (Brooks, Saucony, Asics) I wear a 10. Most boots (Red Wing, Frye) a 9. I wear Dr Martens steel toe at work - size 10 with an insert. I was going to get a pair of iron rangers. The only thing I don't like about Red Wings is the soles aren't great in a wet suburban environment (can be slippery on concrete and wet floors). I've seen the ads for Helms, and saw the Johnsons were on sale, so figured I would give them a shot first (about half the price). I ordered a 9 for the Johnson boots. The leather is very nice, and the fit was perfect in mid thickness socks, no insert (the eyelets don't touch!). The footbed is comfortable, and the ankle support is quite good. They are a nice looking boot (while I initially though about dyeing the white stripe in the sole, I'm starting to get used it), and the hardware looks decent (no coarse edges on the eyelets to rip up the laces). Overall quality is very good (no loose or missing stitches, no imperfections in the leather). Break in is pretty mild. No blisters or irritating rubbing. They wear like a lightweight hiking boot (supportive, but not too heavy, firm last). They can handle activity all day. Soles are good on the surfaces I've tried (dirt, wet and dry concrete and asphalt, interior floors). They seem like an excellent all purpose activity boot. You could certainly perform yardwork with them, although they look too nice for that. They work in light hiking (logging trails or hardpack), and they look good with jeans or khakis. I walk a lot in day to day activity, and these boots hold up well without causing a lot of fatigue. My only reason for giving them 4 stars is they are still pretty new. I've never had a pair of Helms before, but have had other shoes and boots which seemed great the first month, but lost support after that. I fully expect that these will work in well - the thick leather seems unlikely to lose support over time, and I really like the footbed without an insert. I'd highly recommend these boots, and think they are a bargain at their current sales price.

A small sample is only representative of itself, but these boots are as extraordinary as my other pair. Ideal fit from day one, go as well with a suit as they do with jeans, and they’re real attention-getters.

Simply put this is an amazing boot that screams well thought out design. Roomy toe box with a fitted mid-step and heel. Speed hooks for the top two eyelets. Full rubber sole that is absolutely not clunky and loud walking around the house on hardwood floors. Thick leather that is comfy from the start. If my size wasn't sold out I'd buy another pair to hide away for rainy days but instead I'll just be careful and resole often. Got it in black but will roll the dice and get a pair in brown too and perhaps even burgundy because why not. And a word about HELM: aside from amazing customer service that is unheard of in the course of human history, just helpful all around. One day in these boots and I was back ordering a pair of dress shoes which after one wear I'm looking for my third pair of HELM boots/shoes. If considering a pair of taller, practical work-style boots that are a few steps above the standard fare, get a pair of these boots.

The JohnsOn

I am very impressed. The last is very well shaped, there is always a trade off between ease of production and highly foot shaped. These are highly foot shaped. I recommend softening, the leather before first wear the leather is thick and high quality. Thick leather usually means long broken but a bit of leather cream to soft and it’s a breeze. These are really great boots.
