Saturday Six XII

Saturday Six XII

From Iron and Resin, to bourbon and bands, a bar and Joe Rogan to 405 traffic jams...this is the Saturday Six Vol XII.

Wear:  Iron & Resin

Hands down, another one of our favorite brands, Iron & Resin is solid. Many of our staff wear their well designed, well made pieces. I&R is for real people with real work ethic.  Born in a small, Southern California, blue-collar beach town,. Iron & Resin is the brainchild of several friends who we admire. They all have decades of collective experience, building successful clothing brands and compiled to start their own. The result is a small, hand-built collection of goods that draws heavily upon the founder’s own lifestyles and experiences. In a mass-produced, disposable world, Iron & Resin is a product of "one-off" culture. Get yours!

Visit:  Nickel City

Catty corner from our shop on East 11th there used to be a bar called the Longbranch (RIP). It was a bar birthed long before the beginnings of the East Austin inhabitations. If you ever got to spend time there you knew you were somewhere special. That said, if anyone was going to take the bar into its next phase of life there couldn’t be a better duo than the brothers Hunt. Zane and Brandon are known nationally for their Detroit style pizza joints called Via313  (if you haven’t had it then we suggest you get to one of their locations promptly- trust us) and Nickel City is what it is - a simple rad bar that can be the only one you visit in a night because it’s that chill and welcoming. When you’ve had just enough of your beverage of choice, you can step out and up to the window of the Del Ray Cafe trailer for Detroit style coneys, sliders wings, and more.

Watch:  Heaven is a Traffic Jam on the 405

Life isn’t easy, and when mental “disorders” or psychological imbalances are involved, it doesn’t make it any easier. Believe what you will about medications and therapy, this documentary is beautiful. Mindy Alper is a brilliant but tortured 57-year-old artist who channels her depression and anxiety into her work. There’s a lot more we could tell you, but let’s just say that when you see and hear Mindy’s trauma and demons and how they translate into her life and her art, it is simply vivid and extremely powerful. Oh, and did we mention it won an Academy Award for Best Documentary Short Subject? (AND the Full Frame Film Festival AND our very own homegrown Austin Film Festival - wow!)

Listen:  Joe Rogan interview with David Goggins

David Goggins is a retired Navy SEAL and former USAF Tactical Air Control Party member who served in Iraq and Afghanistan. He is an ultramarathon runner, ultra-distance cyclist, triathlete, and world record holder for the most pull-ups done in 24 hours. Joe Rogan interviews him here for many details and stories that are astounding, challenging, encouraging and beyond extreme. Warning: Don’t listen with your kiddos due to explicit language to the max.

Drink:  Garrison Brothers Bourbon

Some whiskeys are just whiskeys, but not GBB. We have standards here, and these guys are legit. Not to mention, they’re good dudes too.  Their bourbon is homegrown, handcrafted and from the finest ingredients. You can tell. Hell, they say it’s the best bourbon whiskey ever made, and we’re definitely not gonna argue that. So if you’re looking for good bourbon made by good people, then give it a shot. You can also come try it at the HELM shop or sip it at any of our upcoming events. We’ll let the bourbon do the talking.

Discover: Our Friends favorite bands from South by Southwest 2018

We figured it’s easy to cut through the crap and get to the root of the real music this way. So we asked a few of our super duper music savvy band-booking friends who their favorite acts were at SXSW this year, and here are the winners. Enjoy! (And you’re welcome 😉)
