Saturday Six XXIX

Birds and Biscuits, Education and Erika, Fiber and Finex...and the beginnings of the HELM Tour 2018.

EAT: BIRD BIRD BISCUIT

We’ve had a lot of biscuits, coast to coast and even from grandma’s kitchen, but let’s just keep it simple here. Manor Road in Austin, Texas is where we found the gold. Go to this place, get in line (sometimes long), and order. Done. We don’t need to write anything else. Just kidding - kind of. Really though, simple is a great word to describe the offerings, and perfect is the right word to describe what you get. We’re not even going to try to list what’s between the biscuits, so you gotta see the menu here to realize that it really doesn’t get better than this. We can and will attest that the biscuits and all the fixins are astonishingly divine. The Dough-Doughs are one of the items that are listed as available “until sold out,” and once you pop one of these cinnamon sugar biscuits in your mouth you’re gonna know why. So whether you want your biscuit stuffed or just to get your jam on it, BBB has you covered in the best biscuit way possible.

READ: EDUCATED: A MEMOIR

This book is a memoir of a young girl, who at the age of 17 escapes her survivalist family in the mountains of Idaho to go on and ultimately earn a PhD from Cambridge University. Her family survived in the mountains preparing daily for “the end of the world.” No medical attention, no formal education, and family issues of violence with no one to intervene.  When one of her brothers escaped and got himself into college, he returned with news of the world outside of the mountain. Tara taught herself enough to take the ACT and was admitted to Brigham Young University. Her quest for knowledge transformed her, and led her to Harvard and to Cambridge University. Describing the struggle between freedom and severing family ties, Tara has crafted an amazing account of breaking free, following her heart and loyalty to her hard-made decisions. Following this true story of staggeringly strong will is like nothing we’ve ever read. It’s so moving and definitely unforgettable - pick it up, and you won’t put it down!

LISTEN: ERIKA WENNERSTROM

If you’re familiar with the Heartless Bastards, then you know who Erika Wennerstrom is. Bryan Parker from Pop Press International writes it too well for us to even try to, so give this a read and take the strong suggestion from us to give the records a spin. So good!

Taking a break from her role as the dynamic frontwoman of beloved roots rock band Heartless Bastards, Erika Wennerstrom embarks on a new journey with her first solo album. Joining her are Lockhart-based producer/engineer Danny Reisch and members of My Morning Jacket, Okkervill River, Shearwater and her longtime HB bandmates. They provide strong backup for Wennerstrom’s voice, which serves as the commanding compass for the others to follow. Working in uncharted terrain, Wennerstrom lets loose more than ever before—vocally as well as lyrically. Her self-exploration arose out of an experience with the shamanic hallucinogenic substance ayahuasca during a soul-searching trip to the Amazon jungle. (...and so on....)”
