Saturday Six XXXII

Saturday Six XXXII

This week we bring you a meowing wolf, a dawning wall, cases to carry, a Canadian atelier, a way to donate by dining and the continued spreading of the good gospel of HELM...this is the Saturday Six Vol. XXXII

EXPERIENCE: MEOW WOLF

Have you heard about this place yet? So far they are in Santa Fe, Denver, Las Vegas, and rumor has it Austin is next in line! We just visited the one in Santa Fe and to say it was an uber creative thrill doesn’t do it justice. A group of 200 highly skilled artists from so many fields came together to create these immersive, interactive experiences that transport audiences of all ages into fantastic realms of story and exploration. Their first permanent installation, launched in March 2016 with support from Game Of Thrones creator George R.R. Martin, showcases the House of Eternal Return, where guests discover a multidimensional mystery house with secret passages, portals to magical worlds, climbing apparatus, and surreal, maximalist & mesmerizing art exhibits. Sounds crazy, right? It is! There’s also a children’s learning center, an amazing music venue and a cafe. As if that’s not enough, they’re a public benefit corporation that focuses as much on the community and giving back as they do their insanely talented and mesmerizing projects.

WATCH: DAWN WALL

You’ve gotta watch the preview for this award winning documentary. Just be prepared for your palms to start sweating within the first 20 seconds. By that point you’ll know if you can handle the suspense or not. If you can, then here’s the story. In January, 2015, American rock climbers Tommy Caldwell and Kevin Jorgeson captivated the world with their effort to climb The Dawn Wall, a seemingly impossible 3,000 foot rock face in Yosemite National Park, California. The pair lived on the sheer vertical cliff for weeks, igniting a frenzy of global media attention, but for Tommy it was much more than just a climb. It was the culmination of a lifetime defined by overcoming obstacles - one of them was being taken hostage at the age of 22 by rebels in Kyrgyzstan, and that’s only the beginning. Read more about it here, and be sure to find out when and where it’s showing near you. It’ll be worth it.

REVIEW: CARRYOLOGY

Bags and luggage aren’t just bags and luggage. At least not to these dudes. Carrology is the real deal when it comes to what, how and why people carry what they do. It’s not just something you put your stuff in - it’s what you put your life in, and these guys put all they’ve got into it. Reviewing any and every kind of duffle, messenger, backpack, roller and more and more and more. The photography and videos are so good, and their wear-testings and field studies are beyond dependable. Throw that in with these guys’ knowledge and lifestyles, and you’ve got a really impressive recipe. So if you’re looking for a bag, want to find one that you didn’t know you needed yet or just want to spend some time surfing a sweet site, then Carryology has gotcha covered. Don’t miss the “Buyer’s Guide” section, which helps you find exactly what you’re looking for. Super cool.

Shop: ATELIER-B

Men’s, women’s and children - this Canadian born company has apparel made locally from high quality textiles and natural fibres. This combination guarantees a long life to each item from their collections. Not unlike their clothing and other creative pieces, their designs are detail focused, well made and say a lot without saying too much. See if they have a store near you, and if so go see their goods in person to truly experience the beauty and craftsmanship of the product. If you happen to be in Denver, they’re set up right next to HELM and Naked & Famous Jeans at the RiNo Source Hotel + Market Hall.

EAT/SUPPORT: AUSTIN RESTAURANT WEEKS

“Help us turn your table of two into dinner for fifty.” Hey Austin friends - try a new local restaurant or go to one of your regular favorites - it’s time to help support the Central Texas Food Bank, then wake up and do it all over again! Austin Restaurant Weeks is happening every day thru Monday, September 3rd. Look at all the amazing restaurants that are part of it and so many splendid options to choose from! Go dine and be generous, just as our awesome local restaurants are doing - it’s really great for us to have such an easy opportunity to help our neighbors in need.
